What they say:  " MindNode is a free and very easy to use mindmapping application. It was created with the user in mind and features a very simple interface for quickly creating visual appealing mind maps.
Full Keyboard Support. Although MindNode really shows it's strenght when used with a mouse, nearly all interactions can be performed very easely with the keyboard."
Observations:  Allows more than one mindmap on a page.

What they say:  " There are basically two pieces of the Semantic Web which user agent should accomplish - annotating content with metadata, and doing stuff with that metadata. MindRaider is here to help you with correlation of information related to particular thought. You must change your stereotypes. Start with your personal resources like files, links, thoughts, friends, etc. These resources can be in turn represented as/associated with Concepts that are organized to Notebooks. On top of the Concepts within a Notebook is built (RDF based) metadata layer that enables MindRaider to provide various Notebook facets (flat/hierarchical/graph-oriented but also semantic based views). Notebooks are further organized to Folders allowing you to build custom thematical domains"
Observations:  An interesting integration of mapping and outlining

What they say:  " Haystack is a tool designed to let individuals manage all their information in ways that make the most sense to them. By removing arbitrary barriers created by applications that handle only certain information ''types'' and that record only a fixed set of relationships defined by the developer, we aim to let users define whichever arrangements of, connections between, and views of information they find most effective. Such personalization of information management will dramatically improve everyone's ability to find what they need when they need it.
You can download preliminary, ''play with it'' versions of Haystack and its source code from the website. Although these versions run reasonably well, and although they demonstrate many of the ideas we are examining, they still have plenty of rough edges that may preclude their use as a tool"
Observations:  Intriguing note taking software tool with concept-mapping mode. Seems to have been dormant since end-2004. Requires Eclipse.

OS: Windows
Price:  Free for 'preliminary' version

Assessment by concept map

This piece discusses the nature of knowledge, the difficulty in measuring achievement in the three types of domain knowledge, and how concept maps offer one way of judging students' knowledge structure.

Framework for mind mapping

Here is a link to a set of free templates for many types of mind maps. This is good solid stuff, and if you have MindManager, there's no reason not to get it.
But if you don't have MindManager, well, there's still no reason to hold back - go and pick up the MindManager Viewer from MindJet's site. That is also free.

Knowledge mapping for communities

Here's an interesting slideshow in which authors Simon Buckingham Shum and Alexandra Okada make a case for a move away from text towards knowledge or mind mapping presentation in a knowledge community. Their objective is to change cognition, no less.

Visual mapping and recession-proofing your job

It looks like businesses are in for a tough time in 2008 and beyond. If your employer downsizes, how can you take steps to make sure you're one of the survivors?

Here are the Knols on mind mapping

Here's a link to my main Knol entitled "mind mapping". There are cross reference items on related terms as well.
