What they say:  " Scrivener is a project management tool for writers. It won't try to tell you how to write - it just makes all the tools you have scattered around your desk available in one application.
Outline
The outliner is another way of viewing the synopses and meta-data of the documents in your project. Restructure your work easily; get an overview of the project so far and what still needs to be done; check how many scenes have Jack as the point-of-view character; read and edit an overview of a scene, a chapter or of the whole draft."
Observations:  Outliner and note taker for Mac.

What they say:  " HeadCase features the following unique capabilities:
* Extensible architecture based on ActiveX plug-ins
* Layered structure allowing elements of Mind Maps (r) to be embellished in stages
* Custom algorithm facility enabling third-parties to alter the behaviour of Mind Map (r) elements
* Direct hyperlinking of Mind Maps one to the other
* Linking to URL's and documents within the user-interface"
Observations:  This mind mapping software tool has an intriguing ability to produce brightly-coloured mindmaps that look hand drawn.
At one time, this software was endorsed by Buzan but since he released his own, rather similar, software the endorsement seems to have disappeared.
I fear for the continued availability of this software, because the contact form doesn't work and the developer's email bounces. It would be sad if it had to be flagged 'historical'.

Screenshot mind mapping software XWiki MindMap
What they say:  " MindMap application allowing to view, import, export MindMaps to and from Wiki pages.
Once you install the application you can create pages that will automatically include a MindMap viewer for the first freemind attachment added to the page. You will then be allowed to import your MindMap in your Wiki and create Wiki pages for each mindmap node. You can also update your wiki from your MindMap (this will overwrite your wiki pages).

First you create a page using the 'create MindMap page' form. This will automatically include the MindMap macros and the mindmaptools macro call.
You can right away upload a freemind mindmap. You should first download freemind from the freemind web site. Premium accounts on MindMeister also allow to create freemind mindmaps.
Automatically the macro will recognize the attached mindmap and show it in the page. It will also show a menu under the mindmap:
- View MindMap Wiki Home
- Update MindMap Wiki Pages
- Delete MindMap Wiki Pages"
Observations:  This is not a mind mapping application, but allows you to include FreeMind mind maps in an XWiki.

Articles
Writing, come what may

There's only a brief mention of mindmapping here, but it's obviously important to the author. Anyway, to me it's a great article on getting moving with writing. I hope you find it so, too.   [Vic]

Project estimating – Mindmaps are a tool in the armory

The key to getting something useful out of this article is to read the author’s title carefully. Mind mapping simplifies the process of project estimating -- it doesn’t simplify the actual task-time estimation. Every project manger knows that the work of a project must be broken into separate and manageable units for estimating. To look at a project and think “That’s about a week’s effort” is a recipe for frustration and missed targets. Mindmaps, spider diagrams and bubble charts are excellent for the first phase of breaking a project into manageable parts. For me mindmaps, as strictly defined by Buzan’s rules, are less suitable than spider diagrams for this type of analysis, but we can assume that Dr. Mariaraj is not being too strict in his use of the term below. [Vic]

Tony Buzan has defined these "rules" for Mind Mapping:

I believe these rules are well worth following if you use mindmaps for learning. They are very hard to follow completely and rigidly - and its not worth trying I have found - if you use mindmaps in adult life, in your work or projects.

Who invented mind mapping

This comes up from time to time - usually in the form of "Buzan didn't invent mind mapping".

Underlying theory of Concept Maps

Here are links to important scholarly papers by Joseph D. Novak and Alberto J. Cañas on Concept Maps, their theory and construction.
