What they say:  " HyperGraph is an open source project which provides java code to work with hyperbolic geometry and especially with hyperbolic trees. It provides a very extensible api to visualize hyperbolic geometry, to handle graphs and to layout hyperbolic trees.

As soon as you want to look at large data volume that has a hierarchical structure, you will find hyperbolic trees very useful - they show more data than standard tree representations like your favorite explorer, and they have a great look and feel.
(You need a java plugin, version 1.4 or higher.)"

What they say:  " JGraph is professional open source software.
JGraph: The free Swing-style component with source code, 140k in size, feature-rich, fully documented and commercially supported.
JGraph Layout Pro: Powerful and fast graph layouts provide automatic positioning functionality to improve user's visual experience.
JGraphpad Pro: Complete rich-client platform for rapid application development. For graph applications where time-to-market is critical.
- Process diagrams, workflow and BPM visualization, flowcharts, even traffic or water flow.
- Database and WWW visualization, networks and telecoms displays, mapping applications and GIS.
- UML diagrams, electronic circuits, VLSI, CAD, financial and social networks and data mining.
- Biochemistry, ecological cycles, entity and cause-effect relationships and organisational charts."
Observations:  This is a development environment for graphical presentation of information. There are many examples of applications that third-party developers have made with jgraph here: http://jgraph.com/screenshots.html and it would be best to visit that to see the flexibility offered.

What they say:  " mxGraph is a Javascript library that uses built-in browser capabilities to provide an interactive drawing and diagramming solution. mxGraph outperforms all existing solutions in startup time, interactivity and functionality.

'The ability to edit complex diagrams within a web browser is the final solution we need to move our entire application to a thin client architecture. mxGraph is a critical component for rich web applications, there's nothing like it on the market.' Steve Wood - Informavores

Unique Advantages
Differentiate your product in the marketplace by enabling your customers to draw and share complex diagrams through a web browser, across every platform:
Centralised updating managed at the server
No client plug-ins or installation required
Deployment using Java, .NET, PHP, static HTML and more
Easy configuration of the application using XML
User interface is HTML and the data is exchanged in XML
Java, .NET or PHP backend for concurrent diagram editing"

Articles
Writing, come what may

There's only a brief mention of mindmapping here, but it's obviously important to the author. Anyway, to me it's a great article on getting moving with writing. I hope you find it so, too.   [Vic]

Project estimating – Mindmaps are a tool in the armory

The key to getting something useful out of this article is to read the author’s title carefully. Mind mapping simplifies the process of project estimating -- it doesn’t simplify the actual task-time estimation. Every project manger knows that the work of a project must be broken into separate and manageable units for estimating. To look at a project and think “That’s about a week’s effort” is a recipe for frustration and missed targets. Mindmaps, spider diagrams and bubble charts are excellent for the first phase of breaking a project into manageable parts. For me mindmaps, as strictly defined by Buzan’s rules, are less suitable than spider diagrams for this type of analysis, but we can assume that Dr. Mariaraj is not being too strict in his use of the term below. [Vic]

Tony Buzan has defined these "rules" for Mind Mapping:

I believe these rules are well worth following if you use mindmaps for learning. They are very hard to follow completely and rigidly - and its not worth trying I have found - if you use mindmaps in adult life, in your work or projects.

Who invented mind mapping

This comes up from time to time - usually in the form of "Buzan didn't invent mind mapping".

Underlying theory of Concept Maps

Here are links to important scholarly papers by Joseph D. Novak and Alberto J. Cañas on Concept Maps, their theory and construction.
