What they say:  " WikiMindMap is a tool to browse easily and efficiently in Wiki content, inspired by the mindmap technique. Wiki pages in large public wiki's, such as wikipedia, have become rich and complex documents. Thus, it is not allways straight forward to find the information you are really looking for.

This tool aims to support users to get a good structured and easy understandable overview of the topic you are looking for."
Observations:  You can't build your own mind maps with this tool (unless you do it by building a MediaWiki), but you can choose from the millions of topics covered in many Wikis. I think this is an intriguing tool, but one of the great values of mind mapping is the process - the thinking you do as you build the mind map. I believe WikiMindMap should be seen as a quick way to grasp the structure of wiki articles rather than as a mind mapping tool.

What they say:  " Task Coach is a simple open source todo manager to manage personal tasks and todo lists. It grew out of my frustration that well-known task managers, such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things todo consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with composite tasks.
Task Coach currently (0.64.2) has the following features:
Creating, editing, and deleting tasks and subtasks.
Tasks have a subject, description, priority, start date, due date, a completion date and an optional reminder.
Tasks can be viewed as a list or as a tree.
Tasks can be sorted by all task attributes, e.g. subject, budget, budget left, due date, etc.
Several filters to e.g. hide completed tasks or view only tasks that are due today.
Tasks can be created by dragging an e-mail message from Outlook or Thunderbird onto a task viewer.
Attachments can be added to task by dragging and dropping files, e-mail messages from Outlook or Thunderbird, or URL's onto a task.
Task status depends on its subtask and vice versa. E.g. if you mark the last uncompleted subtask as completed, the parent task is automatically marked as completed too.
Tasks can be assigned to user-defined categories.
Settings are persistent and saved automatically. The last opened file is loaded automatically when starting Task Coach.
Tracking time spent on tasks. Tasks can have a budget. Time spent can be viewed by individual effort period, by day, by week, and by month.
The Task Coach file format (.tsk) is XML.
Tasks can be exported to HTML. Effort can be exported to XML and iCalendar/ICS format.
Tasks, effort and categories can be printed. When printing, Task Coach prints the information that is visible in the current view, including any filters and sort order.
Task Coach can be run from a removable medium.
Prerequisites: Python 2.4 (or newer) and wxPython 2.8.4-unicode (or newer)."

Writing, come what may

There's only a brief mention of mindmapping here, but it's obviously important to the author. Anyway, to me it's a great article on getting moving with writing. I hope you find it so, too.   [Vic]

Project estimating – Mindmaps are a tool in the armory

The key to getting something useful out of this article is to read the author’s title carefully. Mind mapping simplifies the process of project estimating -- it doesn’t simplify the actual task-time estimation. Every project manger knows that the work of a project must be broken into separate and manageable units for estimating. To look at a project and think “That’s about a week’s effort” is a recipe for frustration and missed targets. Mindmaps, spider diagrams and bubble charts are excellent for the first phase of breaking a project into manageable parts. For me mindmaps, as strictly defined by Buzan’s rules, are less suitable than spider diagrams for this type of analysis, but we can assume that Dr. Mariaraj is not being too strict in his use of the term below. [Vic]

Tony Buzan has defined these "rules" for Mind Mapping:

I believe these rules are well worth following if you use mindmaps for learning. They are very hard to follow completely and rigidly - and its not worth trying I have found - if you use mindmaps in adult life, in your work or projects.

Who invented mind mapping

This comes up from time to time - usually in the form of "Buzan didn't invent mind mapping".

Underlying theory of Concept Maps

Here are links to important scholarly papers by Joseph D. Novak and Alberto J. Cañas on Concept Maps, their theory and construction.
