What they say:  " ReadyNotes is the addictive way to keep and manage your thoughts, notes and ideas.
ReadyNotes is useful for storing things, to do lists, names, numbers and related details, special projects, writings and general thoughts, websites and e-mail addresses (just Ctrl+click on any valid URL, e-mail or Windows directory), lists of books to read and videos to rent, a journal, snippets and stories from websites -- or any kind of information from anywhere!
And because you can create as many categories as you need, you can prevent ReadyNotes from becoming cluttered with too many pages of old or rarely needed information."
Observations:  Note taker software.

What they say:  " Visualize decision trees, create mind maps and more with TreeGXTreeGX is a Windows Forms (WinForms) component for VS.NET that reveals the big-picture in your hierarchical data using cascading connections between topics, sub-topics and highlighting the path to selected topic. At a glance connections can be identified, paths discovered and data relationships grasped all in an easy to use format. Be sure to check out screen-shots from applications using TreeGX to get idea on how TreeGX can benefit your app.

TreeGX for Visual Studio.NET helps you present hierarchical data in different and visually engaging way. If you have been limited by visual appearance of standard tree control then TreeGX will spice up your application user interface, no doubt about it! Our customers report that users of their applications are excited and very pleased with fresh presentation of data provided by TreeGX"

Observations:  This is a component for VS.NET developers to embed in their products, not a stand-alone product.

What they say:  " Data visualization is powerful. Seeing is believing. Spreadsheets were cool 20 years ago. Now we have access to more data and we need new tools to work with the data."
Observations:  Another text-to-diagram, browser based application, but quite different from Diagrammr, or Text2mindmap. Layouts can be chosen from three automatic options, and can be tweaked by dragging objects manually. Fun, but not deeply useful IMO. Neverthless, Forbes found a use for it as the first example shows - http://www.forbes20.com/ - by linking some browser controls and other processing that filters their data before submitting it to Diagramic.

Diagrams generated from plain text are all one colour. If the source is a Google spreadsheet, the diagram will have 2 colours and 2 shapes - the first column in the table is considered to contain the prime data.

This is categorized as a concept mapper because it can draw webs/nets but it would not be possible capable of making a full and useful concept map with linking phrases.

Concept maps and web research

For me, web research and concept maps are a good pairing. As I research - I build a map. As I map - I realise new areas that need research.
This papers variously by Arguedas, CaƱas, Carnot, Carvalho, Dunn, Eskridge, Gram, Leake, Maguitman, Muldoon and Reichherzer have helped me to understand why, and see other possibilities.

Assessment by concept map

This piece discusses the nature of knowledge, the difficulty in measuring achievement in the three types of domain knowledge, and how concept maps offer one way of judging students' knowledge structure.

Framework for mind mapping

Here is a link to a set of free templates for many types of mind maps. This is good solid stuff, and if you have MindManager, there's no reason not to get it.
But if you don't have MindManager, well, there's still no reason to hold back - go and pick up the MindManager Viewer from MindJet's site. That is also free.

Knowledge mapping for communities

Here's an interesting slideshow in which authors Simon Buckingham Shum and Alexandra Okada make a case for a move away from text towards knowledge or mind mapping presentation in a knowledge community. Their objective is to change cognition, no less.

Visual mapping and recession-proofing your job

It looks like businesses are in for a tough time in 2008 and beyond. If your employer downsizes, how can you take steps to make sure you're one of the survivors?
