What they say:  " MindMeister is a collaborative online mind mapping tool - you can capture your thoughts and share them instantly with friends and colleagues.
MindMeister supports all the standard features of a classic mind mapping tool - only online, and with as many simultaneous users as you like!
MindMeister brings the concept of mind mapping to the web, using its facilities for real-time collaboration to allow truly global brainstorming sessions.
Users can create, manage and share mind maps online and access them anytime, from anywhere. In brainstorming mode, fellow MindMeisters from around the world (or just in different rooms) can simultaneously work on the same mind map - and see each other's changes as they happen. Using integrated Skype calls, they can throw around new ideas and put them down on 'paper' at the same time."
Observations:  Three on-line mindmapping services burst onto the web in early 2007 and this one is streets ahead of the others. It covers a full range of mind mapping functions and allows import and export to formats that can be accepted by several mind mapping software packages. If you need to collaborate while mindmapping, this is a good choice.

What they say:  " Comapping makes collaboration easier...
Make mind maps together with your friends and colleagues - simply using your browser.
Instantly updated - collaborate in real-time
Web-based - no installation required and instant access anywhere
Easy mind mapping - a unique auto-layout technology optimizes use of the screen"
Observations:  Strict hierarchy style of mind maps. The main node must be on the left and the sub-nodes always branch out to the right. Opening the sample map makes your browser window fill the screen. Nice re-sizing options when you change the window size, but the rigidity of layout is not what I look for in mind mapping software.

What they say:  " Compendium is a software tool providing a flexible visual interface for managing the connections between information and ideas.
It places few constraints on how you organise material, though many have found that it provides support for structured working for instance, following a methodology or modelling technique. Our own particular interest is in visualizing the connections between people, ideas and information at multiple levels, in mapping discussions and debates, and what skills are needed to do so in a participatory manner that engages all stakeholders.
Validated in both small and large scale projects across diverse sectors in society, it is the result of over 15 years' research and development at the intersection of hypertext, collaborative modelling, organizational memory, computer-supported argumentation and meeting facilitation."
Observations:  Originally developed at NYNEX Science & Technology (now Verizon) and later (in 2000) licensed to the Open University / Knowledge Media Institute.
Compendium is a conceptual follow-on to QuestMap (q.v.) which is no longer available.

Research and mindmapping to kickstart your writing

Here is another slant on getting your writing going -- research and a dash of mindmapping.   [Vic]

Writing, come what may

There's only a brief mention of mindmapping here, but it's obviously important to the author. Anyway, to me it's a great article on getting moving with writing. I hope you find it so, too.   [Vic]

Project estimating – Mindmaps are a tool in the armory

The key to getting something useful out of this article is to read the author’s title carefully. Mind mapping simplifies the process of project estimating -- it doesn’t simplify the actual task-time estimation. Every project manger knows that the work of a project must be broken into separate and manageable units for estimating. To look at a project and think “That’s about a week’s effort” is a recipe for frustration and missed targets. Mindmaps, spider diagrams and bubble charts are excellent for the first phase of breaking a project into manageable parts. For me mindmaps, as strictly defined by Buzan’s rules, are less suitable than spider diagrams for this type of analysis, but we can assume that Dr. Mariaraj is not being too strict in his use of the term below. [Vic]

Tony Buzan has defined these "rules" for Mind Mapping:

I believe these rules are well worth following if you use mindmaps for learning. They are very hard to follow completely and rigidly - and its not worth trying I have found - if you use mindmaps in adult life, in your work or projects.

Who invented mind mapping

This comes up from time to time - usually in the form of "Buzan didn't invent mind mapping".
