Software for mindmapping and information organization

Exchanging mind maps between FreeMind and MindManager

This is one entry in Vic's collection of information about how mind mapping software can communicate. Some packages have a built-in capability to import and export to other types of mind mapping software. Some software authors have kindly provided information about the format of their mind map or interchange files.

This is a starting point, from which this go-to source for interchange information, already substantial, will grow. Let me know about any new information, or any mistakes you spot: Vic at the above domain.

  Mind mapping software:
FreeMind and MindManager

This page is about one specific interchange - swapping FreeMind and MindManager mind
map files: .mmap and .mm. The FreeMind format is the one most commonly accepted for
import and provided for export by other mind mapping software. MindManager is the
second most common.

Interchange between them is complicated by the fact that there is more than one
FreeMind schema in regular use: The present 'live' version of FreeMind (0.8.0) has a
somewhat different schema from that of the Beta (0.9.0), which is in wide use in the
FreeMind community. And then that there is more than one MindManager format -
though this has been stable since version 5: 5, 6 and 7 are equivalent to the best of my
knowledge ... correct me if I'm wrong.

Here is a link to MindManager's Freemind Importer (Import FreeMind files into MindManager
Pro 6 on Windows). It works for MM6 only, unfortunately, and its import capability is limited
to older features.

I am collecting information on which software claiming to export or import FreeMind
files works with which versions, and what the limitations of using non-supported
versions are. Please let Vic know if you can provide more information on FreeMind
or MindManager versions supported by specific software.

One means of transfer between these two packages would be via web-based mind mapping
software (Mind42, MindMeister, Mindomo, etc.) that supports both. There will be limitations,
principally in the metadata recorded against each node, for example, FreeMind's "Attributes"
or MindManager project management data.

XML schema or file format description file:

The FreeMind schema that MindMeister imports is available from
freemind.xsd on Sourceforge and there's a local copy here.

Here is the link to the MindManager 6 XML Schema on the MindJet site. Two key documents
are held as local copies that can be downloaded here: Mindjet MindManager Application
Schema.doc
and Mindjet MindManager Application Schema.mmap
