Software for mindmapping and information organization

Exchanging mind maps with 3D Topicscape

This is one entry in Vic's collection of information about how mind mapping software can communicate. Some packages have a built-in capability to import and export to other types of mind mapping software. Some software authors have kindly provided information about the format of their mind map or interchange files.

This is a starting point, from which this go-to source for interchange information, already substantial, will grow. Let me know about any new information, or any mistakes you spot: Vic at the above domain.

  Mind mapping software:
3D Topicscape

Can read MindManager, FreeMind, and exported PersonalBrain 3 and 4 files.

Can export FreeMind mindmaps and therefore interchange maps with any other software
that can import/export from/to FreeMind. It uses FreeMind's node attributes to support
re-creating a Topicscape if that is re-imported.

Can also export OPML.

The file format is a Firebird database, so here the focus is on interchange formats.

  Can accept files from:

Directly:

- Mind map files (.mm) from FreeMind 0.9.0
- Mind map files (.mmap) from MindManager 5, 6 or 7
- Mind map export files (.pba) from Personal Brain 4

Indirectly:

- Mind maps from earlier versions of MindManager can be exported to outline
text files and from those, be imported into 3D Topicscape. See link section below.
- Brains from PersonalBrain 3 can also be imported into Topicscape but this needs
PersonalBrain Exporter.exe that TheBrain people no longer publish, and some fiddling
around - unzipping and renaming.
- All software that can export a FreeMind mind map file (.mm), namely Comapping,
Mind42, MindMeister, and WiseMapping. There is another route for Mindomo and
Mind42 imports, because that can export a b>MindManager (.mmap) file.

Can prepare files to be read by:

FreeMind, and any other mind mapping software that can read a FreeMind file
(.mm), namely Comapping, Mind42, MindMeister and WiseMapping.

XML schema or file format description file:

The FreeMind schema that Topicscape exports and imports is available from freemind.xsd on
Sourceforge
and there's a local copy here.

Here is the link to the MindManager 6 XML Schema on the MindJet site.
