The business of idea mapping

Aug 28th, 2008 | By

I’ve written before about how Mastering mind mapping can help at work  especially as recession looms. Well now, Chuck Frey has interviewed Jamie Nast on a closely-related topic.  Chuck has entitled the piece “Learn to think visually – or else”. Jamie says “To this day the majority of people have not heard of mind mapping or idea mapping”.

Origins of mind mapping and concept mapping [updated]

For too long now we have had many statements about the origins of visual mapping but there are too few examples, to my way of thinking. I’ve just written about early visual thinking maps and included a couple of cases. If any can add to the list by providing other early examples, I’d love to have

Contributing a little of my knol

I decided I’d add some of my knowledge of mind mapping to Google’s Knol, their competitor to Wikipedia.  That’s just a snippet over on the right. I’ve tried to keep this a neutral definition, and I’d welcome comments. [Update, 22/02/2012: As Knol is to be discontinued, I've captured the page above with Freezepage.  Also, here's my frozen

Where e’er you be let your mind roam free

Up to now, I would have said that uses of mind maps could fit under four main categories: Learning and teaching; creative idea generation and brainstorming; planning and managing tasks or projects; and organising  information.  Always in these, we would expect the items under a branch to be logically related to concepts or topics higher in the

Mastering mind mapping can help at work.

Most people accept, I believe, that we are on the verge of recession.  Maybe already in the downturn in parts of the western hemisphere.  So what’s that got to do with mind mapping?  Survival!  I’ve just put up a few thoughts on how you can use mind mapping skills to better your chances if downsizing looms:  Visual mapping and recession-proofing your job Tip

Singapore claims world-beating mind map

Singapore has claimed that a two-tennis-court sized mindmap all about Singapore itself, is the world’s largest: http://blogist.wordpress.com/2007/11/17/worlds-largest-mind-map-unveiled/ There are hints of an even larger one (“well over the size of a football field”) here: http://pkab.wordpress.com/2007/11/13/capturing-the-second-life-worlds-information-in-one-giant-map/ but that’s in Second Life, so it’s virtual.  I’d call that pushing the claim a bit, wouldn’t you? Our friends at ConceptDraw* have just announced an interesting new site for sharing mind maps over at mindmappedia.com (mindmapwiki.com takes you to the same place). They accept maps in many file formats, not just their own ConceptDraw.  MindManager, VisualMind, NovaMind, MindGenius, iMindMap and FreeMind maps can all be submitted.  You can also submit mind maps in image form, including

Knowledge mapping for communities

Knowledge mapping for communities

I really liked a slideshow that comes from a group at the Open University, UK, so I did a write-up to alert like-minded thinkers.  It’s about different forms of visualizing information, knowledge, argument, debate and evidence.  I’ve done a quick write up in my Seminal papers in information mapping section of mind mapping articles. Favourite moment? This

The mind mapping search engine

The mindmapping search engine has its own site at MindMapSearch.ORG Head on over to: http://www.mindmapsearch.org/ I’ve taken all the links that make up the sources on which the search engine draws, added a description, and categorized the links.  Links can appear under more than one category.  Where a site is mainly about mind mapping,
