Freeplane slips out of Beta (updated)

Freeplane first appeared in Mind-Mapping.Org last year but recently they announced that they were on a stable, live release: 1.1.1

They list the most important new features as these:

* Better inline editor for all plain text nodes * Edge-like connectors (available from connector pop-up menu) * External bitmap and SVG images can be attached & the dialog has file previews * Images can be scaled and reset * New scripting API * Loading and execution of external Groovy scripts * Full-screen mode … (read the full article…)

Mind-mapping.org ‘OS’ category tidying

I recently noticed that the categories for browser based applications were inconsistent in Mind-Mapping.Org – sometimes I’d used “browser based” and sometimes “web based”. I’ve just tidied that up.  Most are now changed to “browser based”. A few, like MindManager, Cmap and Xmind now include “network enabled” as one of their categories.  These do not

Gephi: eye-popping, free graph analysis Gephi: eye-popping, free graph analysis

The latest addition to Mind-Mapping.Org is a mapping application with a formidable collection of exciting and engaging ways of presenting and visually analysing networks – or as maths buffs call them, graphs. Gephi Gephi is an interactive tool for visualizing and exploring networks and complex graphs.  ”This is a software for Exploratory Data Analysis, a paradigm that appeared in the Visual Analytics field of research”, they say.  It is free open source software.

The laws of simplicity – John Maeda

I’m browsing “Designing Universal Knowledge” by Gerlinder Schuller at present, and came across a thought-provoking guide to simplicity (‘laws’ is OTT, but that’s how they are described).  I like this list a lot. Reduce The simplest way to achieve simplicity is through thoughtful reduction. Organize Organization makes a system of many appear fewer. Time Savings

TreeSheets – fast, visual organisation for notes TreeSheets – fast, visual organisation for notes

Did you notice that my last post about new items in mind-mapping.org mentioned eight items but there were actually more in the database?  . . . . oh never mind. That’s because I was playing with a new entry that fitted a need I had, and chatting back and forth with its very capable developer, Wouter van Oortmerssen, as

The initiative on mind & concept mapping software interoperability The initiative on mind & concept mapping software interoperability

It’s here at last!  The first publication of mind-mapping.org‘s information for mindmappers who want to interchange information between one mind mapping software package and another. After several months of (spare-time) work I’ve finished putting all the information I’ve been ferreting out and begging for into a usable form, and in one place. Presentation The hardest part was deciding how to present it.  What I decided on was to show what

What’s all this about “fully instrumented”? What’s all this about “fully instrumented”?

Past versions of mind-mapping.org were limited and made users search for what they wanted from the “all products” list. Some users asked if I could add a search function so that they could check if a specific product was there.  Others want to to look at, for example, all mind mapping software that ran on a Mac, or

Questions about Edraw (Updated) Questions about Edraw (Updated)

Watch Out for Edraw Mind Map.  I have a message from AVG that a component of this software (ssloader.e32) contains a “Potentially harmful program Ardamax.AON I’m familiar with false positives in software (virus warnings for apps that are not infected), so I tested this at Virustotal which tests against 41 virus checking engines.  Five out of

Project management

GoalEnforcer added

I’ve just added GoalEnforcer to mind-mapping.org.  This is a project management product that uses a diagram like a 2-level mind map.  Nodes can have start and finish dates and show percentage completed. Unlike a mind map, the node that starts in the centre doesn’t have to stay there.  You can step around the map and reveal information that was previously hidden, but you’re always limited to the one you have chosen

The Mind-Mapping Wiki The Mind-Mapping Wiki

In a post some months ago, I promised to tell you more about WikIT, the mind mapping wiki but kept getting distracted.  Now I have found a few minutes to keep my word. WikIT is a facinating resource.  It takes the line that different uses of ‘information maps’ (I’m planning a post about that phrase!) are best served by different map types and

Libraries of Mind Maps Libraries of Mind Maps

Have you noticed the growth of sites featuring libraries of mind maps on the web?  I’ve just published a page collecting information about these. I’ve has this on my ToDo list for far too long and yesterday I finally put it to bed here: The Mind-mapping.org Mind Map Libraries List.  When I say “finally” I mean

Eric Blue’s collection

I recently dipped a small toe in the Twitter water (@vicgee) and am starting to find some interesting sources.  It’s a stream of very mixed information – some twitterers telling us they’ve just got up (oh, really? . . . yawn), some quoting aphorisms or saying what their own thinking is just then, others pointing to interesting finds

Welcome Topicscape Pro 2.0 – tags, swinging panels, Oh My! Welcome Topicscape Pro 2.0 – tags, swinging panels, Oh My!

There is a new version of Topicscape Pro out now – version 2.0 and it’s a major upgrade.  Long-time followers of this blog will know that I was one of the early beta testers when Topicscape first went public.  I’ve used it ever since as an information organiser and even occasionally for mind mapping. I tried out their new offering and was delighted to find that it has tags.  I’ve long wanted to
