bubbl.us is a web-based mind mapper / concept mapper that is very easy to use and attractive. It has limitations (like no attachments and limited import / export) but for simple mapping out of ideas and collaboration, it’s hard to beat.  And so is its price.

There are two versions. The Beta version is accessible from a button at the bottom right side of the screen, and this allows the addition of linking phrases between nodes. With bubbl.us, you are not limited to a tree hierarchy, meaning that you can make pretty good concept maps, particularly with the Beta.

You can allow other users access for editing, making this a useful tool for occasional collaborative projects. Be aware, however, that it sometimes goes off-line for a few hours or more. So far, it has always returned with all my maps intact, but do keep backups (images and XML files) if you use it for anything important.

This is flagged as a “Fave” because I use it for casual collaborative projects, and admire the elegant simplicity of its user interface.

This is one of the Top Picks

because they have special attributes that you won’t easily find in other tools.

I’m pleased to be able to tell all users of bubbl.us that version 2.0 can now be embedded.

I contacted them to ask about this, and just had a reply: “Vic, sheet embedding is now available in 2.0. (It’s only available for sheets that were saved in 2.0). -Kirill”

    Great response, thanks folks.

    Hi Perry,

I can’t see information about the embed function being removed in their Help pages for 2.0 so I’ve sent them a message. Will let you know when I get a reply.

Bubbl.us will move to a freemium model – to save more than three maps, users are going to have to pay. Pity, but someone has to pay for the hosting and it’s a sweet little web app.

I like version 2 for its concept-map style linking phrases, but I thought the UI of version 1 and the appearance was better.

We’ll see how it turns out.

bubbl.us is moving on to version2.0 on 1/1/2011.
Version 2 has many improvements, but it is loosing thee ability to embed the code into web pages.

If anyone could suggest a replacement I would be most grateful

I think this is an excellent piece of user interface design. It does what it does well, and by working with limited objectives, it keeps the UI simple.

It is not limited to the strict tree hierarchy of mind maps, which I appreciate.

I use it only when collaborating.
